Recently, I purchased some Mountain Property to build a cabin. Everything was progressing just fine until, I tried to order electricity, then came the SHOCKER. They wanted OVER $10,000 just to bring the power to my property line.
It quickly became apparent that I should explore the Renewable Energy alternatives. The bids, to build and install a Solar-Wind System for my new home, were fairly close. One contractor estimated $27,500 and the other one a little over $30,000.
So, at that point my research REALLY became Serious.
Searching the internet, I found there were lots of Manuals, Guides and Do-It-Yourself kits available. Now, my challenge was to find one with instructions so Complete and Simple even a non-mechanical Irishman like myself could build it.
I began to talk with my new neighbors. One had purchased three different Manuals before he built his system. He offered them to me to study. The first two were just too complicated or the directions weren't complete enough.
Another neighbor recommended two completely different Do-it-Yourself Guides. So, I bought them both, and without a doubt out of the five, one was a lot better than the others. Here are my two top choices, From my experience, the first one is hands down the best buy.

"Green DIY Energy" is by far the easiest and most detailed Solar-Wind Guide available. After tearing apart all 5 of the courses, this one had the most precise step by step process.
This guide also had the most helpful content with 3 separate guides covering both solar and wind (plus bonus guides on how to find free batteries and even solar panels). Everything is broken down into easy to follow mini guides packed FULL of photos and illustrations.
To my amazement my Son and I had assembled a fully functioning (and money saving) solar system in just half a day (a fun weekend project). We picked up all the parts we needed at the local hardware store and the total bill came to only $185.59. I Now have Free Electricity.
For someone who just isn't the mechanical type, following the instructions in the Green DIY Energy guide was amazingly simple and easy to do.

"Earth4Energy"is a very popular product and for a good reason: it gives good instructions for Building Solar-Wind Systems and also batteries.
Although we also do recommend this product, the details of the "Earth4Energy" Guide is not a match for the "GreenDIYenergy" Guide. This one has only 70 pages, some of which are just fluff.
However, Earth4Energy is a fine product and you won't go wrong with it.
Conclusions:
NOTE: (April 2009) - As mentioned before, I didn't just buy one single "Do It Yourself" guide. Altogether, we have 5 of them. Out of the 5 we read, used and analyzed; I can only recommend 2 of them. Yes, we did review the leading most popular programs.
The 2 guides mentioned above are far superior. I sincerely hope my research and experience will be beneficial to you.
